ABOUT MONSTERS DANCE

Owners/Founders: Andy & Becky Funk

The story of Becky and Andy Funk is not just about dance—it’s about purpose, perseverance, and creating something that outlives them. Together, they built Monsters of Hip Hop not only as a dance convention but as a life-changing platform, born from deeply personal experiences and a shared desire to serve others.

Becky’s passion for hip hop and commercial dance began in a community that offered few resources and opportunities for aspiring dancers. Recognizing this gap early on, she developed a strong determination to change the narrative—not just for herself, but for every dancer who ever felt unseen or unsupported. After graduating college, Becky faced a pivotal decision: chase her dream in Los Angeles or stay close to home and create something bigger than herself. Choosing love and family, she married her high school sweetheart, Andy, and began to reimagine how she could channel her passion for dance into a greater purpose.

Andy’s journey into the world of dance came from a very different place—but one no less powerful. His “why” has always been rooted in the memory of his older brother, Alan, who tragically passed away from leukemia at just 19 years old. Alan’s loss left a deep imprint on Andy’s heart, shaping his worldview and inspiring him to live with intention. In Andy’s own words, shared in his book Monsters Family: It’s Not Just Business, building Monsters was never just about business—it was about building something meaningful, driven by heart. The pain of losing Alan ignited Andy’s commitment to make every moment count and to create spaces where people could feel supported, empowered, and seen.

Together, Becky and Andy combined their strengths—her creative vision and industry passion with his heart-led mission and entrepreneurial drive—and in 2003, Monsters of Hip Hop was born. It became the first all-hip hop dance convention of its kind, offering not just elite training and industry access, but a home for dancers of all backgrounds and skill levels. Through mentorship, performance opportunities, and authentic community, they created a platform where talent could be discovered, confidence could be built, and lives could be changed.

Today, Monsters of Hip Hop is more than an event—it’s a movement. With a legacy that spans decades and has impacted thousands, the Funk family continues to prove that when passion meets purpose, transformation happens. Their mission goes far beyond dance: it’s about honoring the past, uplifting the present, and empowering the future.

Their story is a reminder that out of loss can come legacy, and out of dreams can come real, lasting impact. The Funk’s didn’t just create a convention—they created a family. And through that family, they continue to change the world, one dancer at a time.”
